Resetting the Computer
If the computer you are servicing has an unknown password, follow these steps to clear the password. These steps also clear CMOS :

- Prepare the computer for disassembly
- Remove the real-time clock (RTC) battery
- Wait approximately 5 minutes.
- Replace the RTC battery and reassemble the computer.
- Connect AC power to the computer. Do not reinsert any batteries at this time.
- Turn on the computer.
Preparing the Computer For Disassembly
Before you begin any removal or installation procedures :
- Shut down the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
- Disconnect all external devices connected to the computer.
- Disconnect the power cord.
- Remove the battery by following these steps:
- Turn the computer upside down with the front panel toward you.
- Slide and hold the battery release latch to the left. (The front edge of the battery disengages from the computer.)
- Lift the front edge of the battery and swing it back.
- Remove the battery.
RTC Battery
- Prepare the computer for disassembly
- Remove the memory module compartment cover
- Disconnect the RTC battery cable, from the system board.
- Remove the RTC battery.
Reverse the above procedure to install the battery.
